# Charades word generator

Draw a card, act it out, no talking. Over 300 original prompts for family nights and parties, with a round timer, team scores and a cover so only the actor sees the word.

## How to play charades

1. Split into two or more teams and type your team names on the scoreboard.
2. Give the screen to the actor from the team that is up and press **Next card**. With *Hide each card* on, the prompt stays covered until the actor taps it, so the guessers never see it.
3. The actor mimes the prompt without speaking, mouthing words or pointing at objects that give it away, while their team shouts guesses before the timer runs out.
4. Press **Got it!** for a point, or **Pass** when time is up. Either way the turn moves to the next team and a fresh card is ready.

## Choosing the cards

There are 313 prompts across six categories: actions, animals, jobs, sports and hobbies, everyday moments, and made-up films, which are invented plots such as a ghost who is afraid of the dark rather than real titles. Easy cards suit young children; hard ones need a good deal of creativity. *Family & kids* leaves out the handful written for teens and adults, like an office party where the printer comes alive.

No card comes up twice until you have seen every card that matches your settings, even if you reload the page; *Shuffle every card back in* starts a new round of the whole deck. Classic signals help: hold up fingers for the number of words, and tug your ear for "sounds like".

## Questions

**How long should each turn be?**

A minute suits most groups. Give younger children 90 seconds or two minutes, and drop to 30 or 45 seconds for experienced players who want a faster game.

**Can we play on a television?**

Only if the actor is the one looking at it. Big-card mode fills the screen, which works well on a tablet or phone the actor holds while the guessers face the other way.

**Is anything saved or sent anywhere?**

Team names, scores, settings and the cards you have seen are kept in this browser's local storage so a game survives a refresh. Nothing is sent to a server.
